This compound also binds to DNA, forming covalent adducts with guanine residues in DNA. The binding of benzo[b]fluoranthene to DNA can inhibit transcription and replication, leading to cell death. Benzo[b]fluoranthene has tumorigenic properties, which may be due to its ability to bind with dna and inhibit transcription and replication. Benzo[b]fluoranthene has been shown to cause liver tumors in CD-1 mice, although it is unclear if this effect would occur in humans.
