Bis(4-aminophenyl) sulfide is a hydroxylated derivative of aminophenol. It is used as a chemical intermediate in the production of dyes and pharmaceuticals. Bis(4-aminophenyl) sulfide has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats, but not in mice. The carcinogenicity may be due to the formation of reactive oxygen species that results from the hydroxyl group on this compound. This chemical also reacts with deionized water to produce hydrogen sulfide gas and sulfuric acid, which can corrode metals and other materials. Bis(4-aminophenyl) sulfide has been used as an optical dye for Raman spectroscopy, where it emits light at 514 nm when irradiated with laser light.
