3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is a five-membered lactone that is synthesized from cyclopentanone and trifluoroacetic acid. The compound has a gaseous form at room temperature. It can be used to produce polymers with high tensile strength and low weight density. 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol is biodegradable and can be recycled by reacting it with formic acid to produce formate esters.
