Boron nitride is a compound with the chemical formula BN. It is a semiconductor with high electrical conductivity, which is due to its large bandgap of 3.2 eV. It has been used as an additive in lubricants and glycol ethers for its synergic effect on solubility and thermal expansion. Boron nitride nanoparticles have been shown to increase water permeability in hydrophobic materials, such as zirconium oxide. The use of boron nitride nanoparticles has been proposed as a model system for boron nitride in vitro assays and laser ablation techniques.
