It is an analog of propiophenone, a natural product derived from the seeds of the plant Acacia rigidula. 4-Benzyloxypropiophenone binds to the estrogen receptor and competes with estradiol for binding sites. This inhibits the growth of cancer cells by altering their proliferative response to estrogen. 4-Benzyloxypropiophenone also has cardiac effects and can inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in human liver cells.
