4-tert-Butylbenzylcyanide is a synthetic reagent that is used for the synthesis of ethylene, which is an important chemical in the petrochemical industry. 4-tert-Butylbenzylcyanide can be prepared by a transesterification reaction between alcohols and acetic acid, followed by carbonation. 4-tert-Butylbenzylcyanide has been shown to react with molecular oxygen in solution to form a carbonyl group and fluorescence.
