It has antihistaminic activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit histamine release from mast cells and basophils. 2-Benzoylthiophene also has conformational properties that allow it to function as a homodimer in kinetic studies, which can be used to study the mechanism of enzyme catalysis. 2-Benzoylthiophene can undergo chloride transfer reactions with diethyl succinate, leading to a molecule with a positive charge on C2. This reaction is catalyzed by protonation of the C2 carbon atom.
