This compound has been shown to polymerize in the presence of deionized water and form polymers with sodium dodecyl sulfate and chloride ions. The polymerization process can be stopped by adding acid or base. 1,4-Bis(3-aminophenyl)butadiene has been shown to react with itself and other molecules in an intermolecular hydrogen bonding manner.
