4-Bromo-4'-fluorobiphenyl is a liquid crystal that has properties of low viscosity and high dielectric constant. It is a sodium salt of the compound 4-bromo-4'-fluorobiphenyl, which is a liquid crystal with a low viscosity. The compound is used as an additive for thermoplastics to increase their mechanical strength and thermal stability. 4-Bromo-4'-fluorobiphenyl can be dehydrated by heating it at temperatures above 120°C or by exposing it to radiation. This causes the liquid crystal composition to change from nematic to smectic phase, which increases the stiffness of its molecules. When the temperature decreases, 4-bromo-4'-fluorobiphenyl changes back to the nematic phase because of its anisotropic nature.
