4-Bromo-1-ethyl-2-fluorobenzene is a molecule that has been used to study the interaction between molecules and metal surfaces. It can be tunnelled through, which has been demonstrated by the use of scanning tunnelling microscopy. Computational studies have shown that 4-bromo-1-ethyl-2-fluorobenzene interacts with the metal surface electrostatically, leading to what is called a ‘coupled’ state. The nature of this interaction was imaged using two dimensional spectroscopic techniques on an organometallic molecule device. This coupling leads to a change in the rotational dynamics of 4-bromo-1-ethyl-2-fluorobenzene, which can be observed using devices such as electrodes.
