2-Methoxy-3-nitrothiophene is an ether that can be synthesized by reacting piperidine with methoxytoluene. The reaction requires a catalyst, such as zinc chloride or aluminium chloride. The equilibrium constant of the reaction is influenced by the substituent on the nitrogen atom. This reaction is a nucleophilic substitution and occurs in two steps, first with the nucleophile attacking the electrophilic carbon atom and then displacing the leaving group on the other side of the double bond. In this case, solvents such as methanol are required to facilitate this process. Substituents on either side of the double bond affect how quickly this reaction will occur.
