It is prepared by the asymmetric synthesis of cyclohexanone. 2-Chlorocyclohexanone is used in the synthesis of glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) inhibitors, which are used in the treatment of diabetes type II and other diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. 2-Chlorocyclohexanone can be synthesized using solid-phase synthesis on a resin support with sodium carbonate, hydrochloric acid, and trifluoroacetic acid. This reaction produces chloride ions as a reaction product. The chlorine atoms can be reduced to form hydrogen chloride or carbonyl group depending on the reaction conditions.
