2-Chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine (2CTFP) is a synthetic chemical that is used as a nucleophile in organic synthesis. 2CTFP has been shown to react with amines and hydroxy groups, replacing the hydrogen atom with chlorine. The reaction can be carried out at low energy and without the need for high temperatures or pressure. Chlorination of amines produces chloramines, which are used as disinfectants and preservatives. The chlorinating agent sodium trifluoroacetate reacts with alcohols to produce an ester, which is often used in pharmaceutical preparations. 2CTFP is also used as a precursor for other compounds such as methyl ethyl pyridinium chloride, which can be synthesized from 2CTFP by reacting it with methyl iodide and ethyl bromide.
