4-Chloro-3-methyl-6-nitrophenol (4CMPN) is a mutagenic compound that has been shown to cause mutations in the DNA of some strains of typhimurium. 4CMPN is able to interfere with the replication of DNA and thus cause mutations. It reacts with the enzyme thymine glycolase, which can be found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, to form 5-methyl-2-nitrophenol. The reaction time for this compound is dependent on the temperature and pH levels. 4CMPN has been shown to be mutagenic at higher temperatures and pH levels, as well as in microorganisms that are more resistant to mutation. 4CMPN also reacts with dichloromethane (DCM) to form dichlorinated nitro compounds, which have been shown to have mutagenic properties.
