2-Chloromethyl benzimidazole is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that inhibits the replication of the syncytial virus. It binds to the H1 receptor on the surface of cells and blocks an enzyme in the body called histamine N-methyltransferase, which prevents histamine from being broken down. The compound has shown antihistaminergic effects in animal studies and may be useful for treating allergic reactions. 2-Chloromethyl benzimidazole also has nitrogen atoms, which bind to amines in proteins and block their activity.
