3-Chloro-4-methylphenyl isocyanate (3CMPIC) is an immunogen that can be used in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to detect antibodies against the human immunodeficiency virus. 3CMPIC reacts with the sulfate groups on the surface of cellulose derivatives and has a reactive anion that reacts with carboxyl groups on proteins. The plate is then incubated with human cells, which produce antibodies. These antibodies react with the 3CMPIC to produce a precipitate that can be detected by x-ray diffraction techniques.
