6,7-Dimethoxy-N-(4-chloro-2-fluorophenyl)-4-quinazolinamine (DMFO) is a potent inhibitor of mammalian cell proliferation. It is a heterologous small molecule that binds to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enzyme and inhibits DNA synthesis. DMFO has been shown to induce mesenchymal transition in mammalian cells and may be used to develop devices for tissue engineering applications. DMFO also specifically inhibits the translation of endoderm proteins in vitro and can be used as a specific test for endodermal differentiation. This compound is synthesized from 4-(chloro)-2-fluoroaniline with potassium sulfate, followed by the addition of N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine and hydrochloric acid in ethanol. The resulting product can then be purified by recrystallization from methanol and water.
