Cefazaflur belongs to the class of antimicrobial agents. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to cefazolin, its active form. Cefazaflur has been shown to be effective against staphylococcus and other sensitive microorganisms. The drug's activity is due to its ability to inhibit microbial growth by binding to the ribosome and preventing protein synthesis. Resistance may arise from mutations in the ribosomal RNA that change the binding site for cefazaflur or from changes in the structure of the ribosome. The drug can also cause inflammation of the bladder and kidneys, which may be related to its pharmacokinetic properties. Cefazaflur should not be used in patients with an allergy or hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillin-type drugs.
