2-(4-Chlorophenoxy)butanoic acid is an enantiomer of butyric acid. It is an acidic liquid with a pKa of 3.2 and a boiling point of 114°C. 2-(4-Chlorophenoxy)butanoic acid can be used as an analytical reagent to introduce the phenoxy group into organic compounds. The introduction of this group can be done using the chemical reaction between 2-(4-chlorophenoxy)butanoic acid and butyric acid, which produces 2-(4-chlorobutyryloxy)phenol and butyric acid. Sodium chloride or magnesium chloride are often used as solvents for this reaction.
