3-Chloro-5-phenylisothiazole-4-carbonitrile is a byproduct of the arylation of 3-chloro-5-phenylpyrazoles with regiospecificity. The product is used in the preparation of ligands, which are then used to produce dimers and cross-coupling reactions. The process also yields high yields of 3-chloro-5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)isothiazole (3CTMPI). 3CTMPI has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial growth in vitro. It has also been shown to have antiinflammatory properties and inhibitory activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
