4-Chloro-1-benzothiophene-2-carboxylic acid is an industrial chemical that is used as a starting material for the production of a variety of organic compounds. It can be synthesized from xylene and potassium hydroxide in a reaction process. The first step of this process involves the treatment of xylene with potassium hydroxide to produce 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid. This product is then mixed with hydrochloric acid to produce 4-chloro-1,2,4,5,6 benzenetetracarboxylic acid. Finally, 4-chloro-1 benzothiophene 2 carboxylic acid is produced by treatment with sodium sulfide followed by hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide solution. The intermediate compounds in this process are flammable and should be handled carefully.
