It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. 3-Cyclopenten-1-one has been used in the synthesis of various heterocycles and polymers. Cyclopentenones are formed by the reaction of acetylene with ethylene oxide and may be obtained by the reaction of formaldehyde with acetaldehyde.
