Cyclododecanone is a cyclic diketone with the chemical formula C12H22O. Cyclododecanone is a white solid that is insoluble in water and melts at 17 °C. This compound has been used as hydrogen-bond donor, metal hydroxide scavenger, and a polymerization catalyst. Cyclododecanone reacts with sodium salts to form hydrogen bonds and can be used to study conformational properties of cyclic molecules. The reaction mechanism for the conversion of picolinic acid to diacids involves cyclododecanone as a solid catalyst. Picolinic acid binds to the carbonyl group of cyclododecanone to form an ester intermediate, which is then hydrolyzed by water to produce an alpha-keto acid.
