4-Chloromethylbiphenyl is a chemical that has been shown to have carcinogenic potential. It binds to DNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 4-Chloromethylbiphenyl has been shown to increase the potency of other carcinogens in assays with liver cells. 4-Chloromethylbiphenyl is found in small quantities in the environment and has been detected in human urine samples. This compound may be found in food as a contaminant from processing or packaging materials, but it is not known if this compound is absorbed into the body when ingested.
