(R)-4-Chloro-3-hydroxybutyronitrile is a chiral pharmaceutical that has been shown to have hypotensive effects and hypoglycaemic properties. It is formed by the asymmetric synthesis of a ketone, utilising a synthetic route. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating cerebral infarction and other conditions related to poor blood flow. The mechanism of action of (R)-4-Chloro-3-hydroxybutyronitrile is not yet known, but it is believed that it may act as an alcohol or nutrient utiliser.
