The 1-(chloromethyl)-2-phenoxybenzene is a fatty acid ester that is used in the production of coatings, epoxy resins, and phenolic resins. It reacts with formaldehyde to produce a cross-linked polymer that is insoluble in water. The reaction of this compound with formaldehyde produces phenols and alkoxy radicals. The stoichiometric ratio for this reaction is 3:1, but the average ratio for this reaction is 2:1. This compound also reacts with fatty acids to produce fatty acid esters. In dehydrating reactions, it converts into formaldehyde and phenol.
