4-Chloro-4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl is a polyhalogenated aromatic compound that has been shown to be mutagenic. It has been found to inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhimurium and other strains of bacteria in the presence of nitrobiphenyl. This effect may be due to a synergistic interaction between these two compounds. 4-Chloro-4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl can also cause direct damage to DNA in Salmonella typhimurium. The effects of this substance on human cells are not known at this time.
