Ceftobiprole medocaril sodium is a novel synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic that has been shown to be effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Ceftobiprole medocaril sodium binds to the β-lactamase enzyme, preventing the hydrolysis of ceftriaxone and other β-lactam antibiotics. This prevents the formation of resistant bacteria by inhibiting the production of β-lactamases. Ceftobiprole medocaril sodium is active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. It has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties which focus on its ability to be absorbed in the blood stream and distributed throughout the body.
