1-[(4-Chlorophenyl)phenylmethyl]piperazine HCl (1:2) is a teratogen that belongs to the group of herbicides. It has been shown to cause hindlimb malformations in rat fetuses when it is administered at doses of 0.3 and 3 mg/kg. The compound has been shown to cross-link DNA, which may be the mechanism by which it causes teratogenic effects. 1-[(4-Chlorophenyl)phenylmethyl]piperazine HCl (1:2) also binds to collagen, which may be another way it induces fetal malformations. Teratogenic effects have also been seen in humans when 1-[(4-Chlorophenyl)phenylmethyl]piperazine HCl (1:2) was used as an intrauterine contraceptive.
