Carbendazim is a benzimidazole fungicide that inhibits cell growth and DNA synthesis in bacteria. Carbendazim is used as a preservative in paints, plastics, and rubber products and to control plant diseases. It has been shown to cause genotoxic effects in hamster V79 cells when tested with the Ames test and the micronucleus test. This active compound also causes cell lysis in both bacterial cells and hamster V79 cells. The chemical ionization technique has been used to measure carbendazim concentrations in wastewater samples. Low bioavailability of carbendazim has been shown due to its limited absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and rapid metabolism by enzymes such as cytochrome P450.
