Chromium(II) chloride is the salt of chromic acid and hydrochloric acid. It is a strong oxidizing agent that is used in the chemical industry to make other compounds. Chromium(II) chloride is also used as an additive in food, such as sugar, to prevent sugar from crystallizing. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the growth of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and may be useful for treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Chromium(II) chloride can be found in many different forms, including chromium sulfate (CrSO4), which has been shown to have antioxidant properties that help protect cells from oxidative damage.
