It can also be synthesized by reacting iodacetic acid with carbon dioxide in the presence of a base. The reaction yield for this organic compound is high and it has a low reactivity to water, making it useful as a solvent in industrial settings. 2-Chlorobutyric acid reacts with hydrogen ions to form carboxylate ions, which are then bonded to hydrogen atoms in a hydrogen bond. This process can also be reversed, forming carboxylic acids from 2-chlorobutyric acid. 2-Chlorobutyric acid is also used as a precursor to other organic compounds such as fluoroacetic acid and butyric acid.
