Cupric isobutyrate contains a copper ion that reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce the radical CuO. This radical then reacts with organic molecules, such as polyesters and isobutyric acid, to form quinones. Quinones are important intermediates in the electron transfer reactions of many biological systems. Cupric isobutyrate has been shown to be used in nitrate removal from water by oxidation of nitrate to nitrite, which can then be converted into nitrogen gas. Cupric isobutyrate is also an important intermediate in the manufacture of plastics and rubber.
