1-Cyclohexene-1-carbonitrile is a reactive monocarboxylic acid that has been used as an analog for acrylonitrile. It reacts with hydrogen chloride to form 1-chlorocyclohexene-1-carbonitrile, which in turn reacts with chlorine gas to form 1,2-dichlorocyclohexane. The reaction solution contains a mixture of the two products and unreacted starting material. The nmr spectra show three different resonances at δ 4.8 (the methyl group), δ 3.3 (the chlorine atom), and δ 2.5 (the carbon atom). Reaction rates have been determined by measuring the activation energies of β-unsaturated ketones, giving a constant of -14.6 kcal/mol.
