Chromium dioxide is a magnetic material that can be used in devices such as hard disks and magnetic tapes. It has been shown to have anisotropic properties, which depend on the method of preparation. Chromium dioxide has been used experimentally to produce polyelectrolytes with specialized functional groups, including carboxylates and amines, for use in techniques such as electrospinning. The electron spin resonance (ESR) technique is commonly used to characterize the magnetic properties of chromium dioxide. This material has also been used to make organic-inorganic hybrid materials that are useful in organic solvent extraction processes.
