The mechanism of this reaction involves the elimination of hydrogen chloride, which forms hydrochloric acid. The reaction can be controlled by adding either alkali metal or chloride ions to the reaction mixture. This process produces 2 products: aldehyde and alkyl chlorides. 3-Cyclohexene-1-carboxaldehyde is primarily used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and nylon 6,6 from ethylene glycol.
