Captopril EP Impurity J is an impurity of captopril that has been shown to be pharmacologically active. Captopril EP Impurity J binds to angiotensin receptors and is a potent inhibitor of the renin-angiotensin system. It also has selective effects on tissues such as the choroid and striatum, where it inhibits formation of angiotensin II. Captopril EP Impurity J is metabolized by hepatic enzymes, leading to the production of thiorphan, which has similar pharmacologic properties but lacks selectivity for tissues. Captopril EP Impurity J is reversible in rat tissues and may have a role in the development of hypertension.
