This compound reacts with magnesium to form Grignard reagent, which can be used to synthesize other organic compounds. The reaction time required for this compound to react with magnesium is 30 minutes at room temperature. The product of this reaction is dimethylformamide (DMF). DMF is a clear liquid with a boiling point of 130 °C and a density of 1.02 g/mL. It has been shown to be an effective solvent for reactions involving sulfoxide and hydroxide solution. The byproduct of this reaction is chloride, which has been shown to have antibacterial properties.
