Chlorpyrifos is a chemical pesticide that is used to control insects and weeds. It is a broad-spectrum organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitor that targets the nervous system of pests, causing paralysis and eventual death. Chlorpyrifos is used in agriculture as well as in human serum, wastewater treatment, and methyl ethyl anhydrous sodium (MEA) production. The metabolism of chlorpyrifos includes hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. It also has been shown to have effects on the activity of gsh-px enzymes in human erythrocytes.
