2-(Cyanomethylthio)acetic acid is a sulfide that is used as an antibiotic. It has been shown to be effective against gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella enterica. 2-(Cyanomethylthio)acetic acid is also effective against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. The potassium salt of 2-(cyanomethylthio)acetic acid is used in treating the infection of Clostridium perfringens in humans. This drug eliminates many kinds of infections caused by gram-negative bacteria, such as those found in polluted water or infected wounds.
