N-(4-Cyanophenyl)-glycine is a synthetic, high-yielding drug substance that is used as a bronchoscopy agent. It is a white crystalline powder with a melting point of 196-198°C and solubility in water at 20°C of about 8 g/l. The purity of N-(4-cyanophenyl)glycine can be determined using various analytical techniques, including gas chromatography, laser light scattering, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Impurities are characteristic of the synthesis process and are usually removed during purification. The compound is used for the production of dabigatran etexilate (Pradaxa). This drug binds to thrombin and inhibits its activity by forming covalent bonds with the enzyme's active site serine residues. A decrease in thrombin levels will lead to an increase in fibrinolysis.
