Cobalt(II) bromide, anhydrous can be used as a catalyst for the oxidation of fatty acids and the hydroxylation of phenols. The mechanism of this reaction is unknown. Cobalt(II) bromide, anhydrous is also used as a catalyst in the synthesis of 5-hmf, which is a chiral molecule with potential use in kinetic resolution. The reaction mechanism for this process has been studied with NMR spectroscopy and kinetic data has been collected to determine the activation energies for this process.
