2-Chloro-3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde is a cholinesterase inhibitor that belongs to the class of amaryllidaceae alkaloids. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. This compound has been shown to produce significant neuroprotective effects in animal models of Alzheimer's disease and may have potential as a palliative treatment for this condition. 2-Chloro-3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde also inhibits butyrylcholinesterase and other enzymes with lower potency, suggesting it may have a wider range of uses than other cholinesterase inhibitors.
