3-Cyanoindole is a quinoline derivative that binds to molybdenum and has been shown to have anticancer activity in the PC3 cell line. The compound inhibits the production of fatty acids, which are important for tumor development. 3-Cyanoindole also inhibits the growth of thp-1 cells in an oxygen-depleted environment. 3-Cyanoindole has been shown to be effective against hypoxic tumor cells in a reaction vessel. It has also been shown to have x-ray crystal structures that can be used for further study. This molecule is synthesized from the reactants methanesulfonic acid, benzaldehyde, and nitroethane by reacting them with a base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium tetrachloroplatinate at a temperature of -78°C.
