Citronellyl formate is a monoterpene that is used as a natural control agent in the field of microbiology. Citronellyl formate has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus strains. It also has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of acid-producing bacteria and dry weight. Citronellyl formate is soluble in water and can be used as a detergent composition or as an additive in tissue culture media. Citronellyl formate has been shown to kill bacteria by causing them to lyse.
