Descripción:Gamma-carotene is a polycarboxylic acid that is a major food component. It has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in the brains of mice and may be important for the prevention of dementia. Gamma-carotene is found in plants, where it acts as a photosynthetic pigment, absorbing light energy and converting it into chemical energy. It also functions as an antioxidant, which protects cells from damage by free radicals.The biosynthesis of gamma-carotene starts with geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGDP), which is then converted to phytoene by phytoene synthase. This reaction involves removal of two hydrogen atoms from GGDP, followed by the addition of two acetate groups. The next step in the pathway is conversion to lycopene by lycopene cyclase, and finally to beta-carotene by beta-carotenoid dehydrogenase.
