4-Cyano-3-methylbenzoic acid is a ligand that can be used to detect lanthanide ions. It has been shown to have a high sensitivity and low detection limit for lanthanides such as europium, terbium, and dysprosium. 4-Cyano-3-methylbenzoic acid emits red light when it is in the presence of oxygen atoms, which can be used to measure oxygen levels in the atmosphere. 4-Cyano-3-methylbenzoic acid also has luminescent properties that are dependent on its coordination number and wavelength. The emission wavelengths of this ligand range from 380 nm (lowest) to 640 nm (highest).
