Calcium phenylpyruvate is a medication that is used in the treatment of depression. It helps to restore neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, by inhibiting their reuptake, which increases their availability for release. Calcium phenylpyruvate is also used to increase the pH of the stomach and help break down food. Hydrochloric acid and metal hydroxides react with phenylpyruvic acid in this process. This reaction mechanism can be explained by the use of kinetic studies that have been conducted on histidine and benzoate. The effervescent properties of this drug are due to its reaction with sodium carbonate. The increased chloride levels in the blood lead to a change in mental state, which may cause psychosis or low energy.
