Cinnamyl chloride is a glycol ester that can be used as an inhibitor in the treatment of infectious diseases. It is also used in industrial preparation to produce allyl alcohol and acrylates. Cinnamyl chloride reacts with copper chloride to form a complex, which then reacts with allyl bromide to give cinnamaldehyde. This reaction is carried out on a solid catalyst, such as copper, iron or nickel, at elevated temperatures and pressure. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of acylium ions and alkyl halides. The nitrogen atoms are bound to the α-pinene molecule and the cyclohexane ring forms the backbone of the compound.
