(R)-1-Chloro-2-propanol is an oxidant that can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is prepared by chlorinating benzene with chlorine and hydrogen chloride in the presence of a catalytic amount of acid, such as oxetane or chloride. The reaction is carried out in a closed vessel to prevent contact with air and moisture. The product can be purified by distillation or recrystallization. (R)-1-Chloro-2-propanol is an excellent oxidizing agent that can be used to convert primary alcohols into their corresponding ketones. It also reacts with benzaldehyde to produce benzoin methyl ether, which can be used as a synthetic intermediate for other organic compounds.
